“ You cannot legislate good will - that comes through education. ” - Malcolm X The Bermuda Sugar Tax supposed purpose is to encourage healthier decisions which would lead to healthier people. I do believe the role of the government is to protect its people, sometimes from themselves, but this tactic is faulty. We have seen sugar taxes and other punishing or restricting strategies executed elsewhere and those destinations aren't any healthier because of it. We cannot force someone to be healthy, but what we can and should do is educate people on what health really is; the numerous benefits and rewards of being healthy; while providing the resources needed to achieve it. I believe this would be more beneficial to dealing with Bermuda’s health crisis vs taxing selected beverages and candies. For example, the average adult doesn’t know they should be consuming roughly 7 servings of vegetables a day. Some studies suggest the average adult only gets 1.3 servings of vegetables a day. Th...

Why I Stopped Posting Transformation Pictures

Disclaimer: This is not an attack on any coach/pt or individuals that use/post weight loss transformation pictures. This is, as title states, simply why I decided not to post them anymore. Weight loss transformation pictures can be used by business and/or social media to define health, happiness and success by illustrating the differences of someone at the start of a journey vs a snapshot of how they may look some time later. Most put the attention on comparing the two images and not the journey in-between. I used transformation pictures to show clients how far they have come and to continue to encourage them. I’ve posted them in the hopes to inspire others as well as to promote my services. But after a lot of self-reflection on what I want to do and how to achieve it I decided to stop posting transformation pictures and here’s why: Enforces a false narrative about health Transformation pictures enforces the belief a look defines our health and if we can just achieve this look, no matt...

Why I Don't Do Biggest Loser Competitions

Firstly, this is not in any way shape or form to bash or pull down anyone that does or has partaken in these types of competitions. This is simply why I don’t do them. I get asked regularly to do one or if I’m helping with a particular one and the answer is always no. When asked why I don’t I avoid really giving an answer to anyone that’s not a client of mine because I don’t want to discourage them from doing it if they wanted and/or I might not be able to go into details and fully expressed my opinion. So this is simply me answering why I don’t. Anyone that has talked to me about health or achieving a goal knows I feel one major reason people fail is because they go into a goal with the wrong mind-set. The Biggest Loser reality show is always an example I use. These competitions focus on doing extremes to achieve a goal. The goal being lose as much weight as soon as possible. Sound familiar? And the way they do it is by extreme training and low calorie dieting and they get results. On...
